Bringing You The World

CET World

Wednesday marks the debut of a new channel: CET World.

CET World will feature documentary, public affairs, and news programming such as American Experience, Frontline, Nova, Nature and many others. CET is the only local PBS station to bring the World channel to Cincinnati.

This channel will be available over-the-air on our digital channel 48.2, as well as Time Warner Cable channel 950 and Insight Cable channel 219. Unfortunately, this means our CET Create channel has to move. CET Create will be available only on Time Warner channel 949.

We think you’ll agree that CET World presents the best of the best programming that PBS has to offer.

Tune in tomorrow to 48.2 (and TWC 950 or Insight 219) beginning at 6am… and then leave a comment here to let us know what you think.

  1. Removing Create from over the air broadcast seems a poor decision. Adding another digital channel (48.3 perhaps?) rather than swapping it with World would be more in keeping with the spirit of PBS. Making it exclusively available via TimeWarner cheats non-subscribers of some great programming. While the World channel is good as well, why were the dollars not spent to introduce this channel over the air without bumping Create?

  2. I think it was a good decision to drop Create in favor of World. Create is still available of WPTD-DT. World looks like it will have a good mix of programming. Adding subchannels is not the answer, it will just make 48.1 look worse than it already does. When it was just 48.1 and the test loop, I don’t think you could find better HD.

  3. Doug:

The situation is two-fold. In order for CET to carry World, PBS requires it to be broadcast it over the air. CrEaTe, being a network from American Public Television, does not require a must-broadcast. So there is that problem.

Then there is the issue of bandwidth. In order to maintain our high quality HD service, we can only multicast one other video signal. Also, we’re using some of that digital bit stream for Ohio Emergency Communications.
It’s unfortunate that those who rely on broadcast only are missing this channel. It was a very difficult decision to make and it wasn’t done on a whim. However, we feel that in the long run, viewers will come to enjoy the high quality program that CET World provides.
