We here at CET are saddened to report that actor John Inman has passed away at the age of 71. Fans will remember him as Mr. Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries from the BBC series, Are You Being Served. As Mr. Humphries, Grace Brothers’ Senior Menswear Assistant, Inman played to perfection the slapstick and broad double entendres that the series was known for. Inman made Mr. Humphries so popular that “I’m free” became a national catchphrase.
Inman also took time out of his schedule to work with PBS stations across the country to help pledge for Britcoms such as Are You Being Served. In addition to special retrospectives on Are You Being Served, there were also specials highlight in his career such as John Inman In America
and Funny Turns: John Inman. These programs featured pledges breaks with Inman displaying charm, wit and, dare I say, grace that made him much loved by viewers around the world.
Are You Being Served can be seen weeknights at 11pm and Saturday nights at 8pm on CET. And please leave your favorite Mr. Humphries moments or recollections in our comments section. — Brian
PS: Above, right, is our President & CEO, Susan Howarth, with John back when Susan was Executive Director of Arkansas’s public televisoin, Arkansas Educational Television Network.

I was shocked to learn of Mr. Inman’s passing.
Of course we did not hear about it from any
Cincinnati news station. I learned of it on the CET site.
He played Mr. Humphries brilliantly.
He will be greatly missed.
